Allergy Season is Here!

Monday, April 15th, 2013

With the freezing winter weather fading away, the arrival of April brings some familiar Hampton Roads sights:   beautiful skies, birds chirping, new leaves on the trees, colorful summer nelumbo nucifera 300x138 Allergy Season is Here!flowers in bloom, and……POLLEN.    In some areas, the pollen can drop like blankets over driveways and cars.   And if you are like me and many local residents, this brings allergies in the form of red and itchy eyes.

For many individuals, the pollen causes your body to send allergy or mast cells to the surface of the eyes where they release histamines, which cause the itching sensation.   Rubbing the eyes tends to only worsen this biological response and worsen the itching sensation.    But this doesn’t mean you can’t get out there and enjoy one of the truly best times of year in Hampton Roads.

There are some ways to help.    After spending time outdoors, be sure to take a shower and change into new clothes.   Also, artificial tears such as Systane Ultra can help wash allergic material from the surface of the eye and provide temporary soothing of the eyes.    A cool compress may also help Longhorn 4080 Cherry Blossom 300x224 Allergy Season is Here!calm and sooth the eyes.    Also, and this may be the toughest advice to follow, try not to rub your eyes.   This further exposes your eyes to pollen on your hands and exacerbates the histamine response.

Over-the-counter allergy medicines like claritin or zyrtec may be helpful in relieving nasal symptoms of seasonal allergies but they may not be as effective in controlling the redness and itchiness of the eyes.   In that case, prescription allergy eye drops provide quick and effective relief.    The most effective allergy eye drops are “combination” drops which act to control both the mast cells and the histamines released by those cells.   Also, these allergy eye drops are very safe in most patients and may be used for extended periods of time to get relief from seasonal allergies.

Don’t let allergies stand in your way of enjoying this beautiful spring weather, especially since, after a crazy winter, I think we’ve earned a great spring this year!

“Do I need glasses to drive?”

Tuesday, April 9th, 2013

I think when many people ask this question, they are really asking “does the DMV require me to wear glasses or contacts while I drive?”     Each state has different requirements, but let’s take a look at the requirements for Doc7 300x195 Do I need glasses to drive?the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The DMV in Virginia states that you must wear vision correction if your natural vision is 20/40 or worse with both eyes open.   In fact, if you took your vision test at the DMV and didn’t pass, they would require your eye doctor to fill out the appropriate form.   Or, if you used your glasses/contacts to pass the vision test at the DMV, the requirement to wear vision correction is now on your license.

But,  I also like to let patients know while 20/40 vision means the DMV feels you can drive without glasses, 20/40 vision is still not very good vision.    20/40 vision means it will take a person longer to recognize important road signs.    20/40 vision could cause you to squint or focus more attention to recognizing important road signs and thus distract you from other vital tasks involved in driving.   A second or two longer spent to see something could be enough of a distraction to cause you to miss dangerous events  around you on the road.

So, even if the DMV may say your vision isn’t bad enough to require glasses for driving, I often recommend driving glasses to anyone with less than 20/20 vision.   Improving 20/25 or 20/30 vision back to 20/20 with glasses can only serve to improve your visual function while driving and only enhance your chances for safe arrival at your intended destination.    Not to mention, additional treatments  like polarization for daytime driving or anti-glare lenses for nighttime, can also improve driver safety.

As always, I’d love to hear your comments or questions. Give us a shout over on Facebook or on Google+. And, remember, you can now request your annual eye exam appointment at our office by clicking here.

Optometrist: Vision AND Eye Health Provider

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

I’m  breaking my rule against soap box blogging in order to say how much I enjoy being an optometrist.    Truly, it is a personally rewarding profession and it encompasses many more aspects than most may realize.

Many people see optometry as the profession that simply diagnoses vision problems and prescribes glasses and contact lenses.    And if that were the full extent of my responsibilities as an optometrist, I would still be proud.    There are few things more fulfilling than helping a young child see the board in the classroom clearly for the first time, or helping a 40-something overcome “go-go-gadget arms” with the prescribing of progressive bifocals.    And there is so much satisfaction in helping an individual afflicted with keratoconus regain usable vision with custom designed contact lenses.

Dr. Russ Beach, Optometrist

But there is so much more to optometry than these wonderful examples above.     Optometrists, as the primary eye care providers in this country, are fully educated, trained, and licensed to diagnose and treat medical conditions of the eye.    During the 4 year graduate school training of an optometrist there are literally thousands of clinical encounters within educational rotations and countless hours attending classes and studying about the medical aspects of the human eye.   By the time an optometrist graduates, passes all 3 parts of national competency board exams, and attains professional licensing they are fully prepared to address the medical aspects of eye care.    This includes diagnosis of medical eye conditions, the treatment of such conditions through pharmaceutical means as appropriate and the professional determination of when to involve the ophthalmic surgeon as dictated by the condition.

Given all of this I find it unfortunate that I’ve encountered, on several occasions, local physicians who completely misrepresent the training and abilities of optometrists to their patients.     If physicians such as these have lived in a bubble for the last 30 years, than I take responsibility, on behalf of my profession, for not doing a  better job of educating the health care community of the highly trained role of optometrists within patient care.    If members of the health care community do know of the advances of optometry over the last 3 decades,  but still elect to mislead patients, it’s a very unfortunate reminder that it is time to put politics aside and understand that patient care, not egos of health care providers, should be the ultimate priority.

As I step down from my soap box, I hope that patients and fellow healthcare providers will come to understand the essence of optometry:   we are  vision care providers who are fully educated, trained, and licensed to diagnose and treat medical conditions of the eye.     Our responsibility to our patients includes vision AND eye health.

Diabetes Awareness Month: Diabetes Associated with Risk of Dementia

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

November is American Diabetes Awareness month.   All this month we’ll be posting information about this very common disease.   If you know someone with diabetes please share these posts with them and help us increase awareness.

A recent study published in the journal, Neurology, suggests that diabetes may be associated with developing many types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.    The study looked at a group of patients with diabetes alzheimers disease1 Diabetes Awareness Month: Diabetes Associated with Risk of Dementiaand group of patients without diabetes.   They monitored these patients over a period of 15 years.   The rate of dementia development in the diabetic group was 35% higher compared to the group without diabetes.

The authors of the study suggested that Diabetes should be considered a risk factor for the development of dementia.   They also suggested that the reduction of blood sugar in diabetics is “critical to prevent future dementia.”
